Mosaic 2024 Art Grants FAQ

If you have questions not covered in the Art Grants FAQ, please contact: artgrants@mosaicexperiment.com

WHAT IS MOSAIC EXPERIMENT?

Mosaic Experiment is a four-day event, inspired by Burning Man, held late in September/early October in Rutland, Ohio. Everything is organized, built and paid for by participants and volunteers with their own resources.  The Mosaic Experiment site is called “Reclaim” by the landowner, and is an old strip-mine now reclaimed to rebuild the natural ecosystem.

WHAT IS AN ART GRANT?

Mosaic Experiment provides grants to aid our artists in bringing their ideas to fruition. Our goal is to encourage art that fosters the ideals of the Mosaic Experiment and Burning Man community. Artists working in experimental, emerging, cross-disciplinary, and traditional categories are encouraged to apply, to display their art, and add to the collective, participatory spirit of the event. This program is designed to help inspire and facilitate new ideas in both budding and seasoned artists.

WHAT DOES AN ART GRANT COVER?

Mosaic Art Grants only cover materials (lumber, hardware, decor), for projects going to Mosaic. Art Grants do not cover individual artists’ time, installation insurance, tools, tickets, food, alcohol, or other supplies. Existing, established projects by visiting artists that require assistance with transportation costs will be considered on a case by case basis and will require all setup logistics/ requirements to be specified on the application. *Other transportation assistance and operational costs (lights, energy, fuel for generators) may be considered on an individual basis if requested.

WHAT QUALIFIES FOR AN ART GRANT?

Crafts, Design, Drawing, Illustration, Installation, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Dance, Theater, Interactive Installation & Sculpture, Film, Video, Animation, Teleplays, Sound Art, Immersive Audio & Video Works, as well as Temple and Effigy specific installations

If you can convince us it’s awesome and you can build it for Mosaic we will consider it.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE FOR AN ART GRANT?

Any individual artist, team of artists, or established group may apply for an Art Grant. For teams of artists, please have just one person submit an application for the entire group. Everyone under 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign the contract for you.

HOW ARE ART GRANT RECIPIENTS SELECTED?

Evaluation of the applications and selection of artists’ projects to receive support will be done by the Mosaic Art Grants Selection Committee, made up of volunteer artists and art lovers in the community. Art Grants applications will be first reviewed by the Art Grants Leads. The Art Grants Selection Committee then reads and discusses all applications in a blinded selection process, culminating with the selection of Art Grant recipients.

Art Grants applications are judged on the following criteria, in no particular order:

  • Clarity of Concept, Creativity, Originality, Aesthetics, & Impact

  • Interactivity, Inclusivity, & Accessibility

  • Build Plan/ Timeline/ Preparedness

  • Budget Requirements

  • Relationship to Current Year’s Theme

  • Sustainability

  • Burn Plan (*Required for Effigy and Temple)

Applicants might be asked if they can complete the project for less funding than they originally asked for, so that Mosaic may fund as many projects as possible. Project completion does not need to be solely dependent on Mosaic Experiment Art Grant funds. It may also be supported by personal funds, crowdfunding sites, Burning Man grants, etc. Mosaic Experiment Art Grants are a method of encouraging our participants to make their artistic dreams a reality.

MAY I BURN MY ART PROJECT?

In short, no. We are limited to only one burn scar on the property, therefore only the Temple art project and the Effigy will burn. The Temple art project will need to be mobile to be placed on the burn platform. It will require submission of a detailed Onsite Transportation Plan for how it will get from its placement location to the burn platform. This Onsite Transportation Plan must include who will move it, how they will move it, and when they will move it. Any proposed Onsite Transportation Plan relying on a vehicle must provide a back up plan in case of inclement weather, which makes the land impassable to cars.

  • The Effigy or Temple art project must have a footprint no bigger than 10 feet in diameter, and can be no taller than 10 feet. Please keep in mind that as structures fall, the footprint will expand by half the height when it falls.

  • Please consider post burn cleanup as part of your LNT plans.

HOW DO I APPLY FOR AN ART GRANT?.

Review the Prohibited Burn Materials list and the Survival Guide, then fill out the official application here.  In order to complete the application, you will need a budget, build plan/timeline, and other supporting materials to help us understand your vision. Effigy and Temple applications will also require a detailed Burn Plan. The more detailed the information about what your project is, what it is made of, what materials you will use, and what it will cost, the better.

  • Budget: Your budget will be a line item list of materials you are using, what you’re using them for, and how much they cost. If your project requires its own insurance, be sure that cost is reflected in your budget.

  • Build Plan/Timeline: Walk us through your schedule for your build from now until the event. Temple applications must include detailed transportation plans. Temple and Effigy applications must also include detailed after burn plans.

  • Supporting Materials: Show us your idea through sketches, models, prototypes, wiring diagrams, clear concept blueprints, pictures, etc. JPG or PDF format only, please.

All applicants will be notified of the Art Grants Committee decision regarding their submission via email.

I WAS AWARDED AN ART GRANT! NOW WHAT?

After being awarded a grant, you will be required to sign a contract and provide a progress report prior to the event. Save your receipts! All Art Grant recipients are required to photograph and turn in their receipts in order to receive their final disbursement. JPG or PDF format only, please. The total funding for your grant will be disbursed in three installments:

  • The first payment (50% of your total Art Grant amount) will be sent soon after the contract has been signed.

  • The second payment (25% of your total Art Grant amount) will be sent about three weeks after the first payment, pending receipt of progress report. A progress report may include, but is not limited to, pictures that show proof of the work in progress, photos of receipts for materials purchased, etc.

  • The third and final payment (25% of your total Art Grant amount) will be sent within a month after the close of Mosaic Experiment, once all Leave No Trace efforts have concluded and all receipts have been submitted.
