Mosaic's Fire Safety Lead is the point person for all aspects of the use of fire at Mosaic Experiment -- safety first and foremost. The Fire Safety Department is divided into several sub-areas of responsibility. These can be best expressed by the type of fire involved:
Campfires
Fire performance
Propane usage
Art burns
Ideally, a fire safety lead will have the expertise necessary to personally handle at least two or three of these categories. Any area(s) where the lead feels unqualified must be covered by a designated co-lead. In the following sections, responsibilities may be divided between the lead and any co-lead(s) as necessary.
Other departments you’ll work with
Conclave to ensure safe fire performance(s).
Promotion to recruit Fireflies.
Volunteer Coordination to organize Fireflies.
LNT to inspect campfire setups and get final burn scar clean-up approval.
Art Grants to sanity check any burn plans prior to selection of grant recipients.
DPW to provide fire safety gear for effigy burn.
Effigy to approve the burn plan and coordinate its safe execution.
Rangers to manage Perimeter and help determine when to drop it.
Pre-Burn Responsibilities
Attend the Summer Retreat to get ready for the final preparations for the event.
Edit the survival guide and other documents as necessary.
Encourage participants to join the Fireflies or Perimeter.
Publicize the fire spinning policy, especially the existence, timing, and necessity of the daily safety meeting.
Ensure there is a plan for the lead or a co-lead to handle each onsite responsibility.
Advise the effigy team and any other artists regarding the use of appropriate materials (including any accelerants) and the plan for safely burning their art.
Approve all art burns and coordinate their timing relative to each other and effigy.
On Site Responsibilities
Inspect any propane effects for compliance with Mosaic policy and general safety.
Assist LNT in resolving issues related to unsatisfactory campfire setup.
Brief the Fireflies on their duties, distribute their sprayers, and collect them after Perimeter falls.
Participate in the management of events surrounding and including effigy burn.
Collaborate with the perimeter leads to determine the timing of dropping perimeter.
Advise the LLC regarding any egregious violation of fire safety policy potentially warranting removal from the event.
Post-Burn Responsibilities
Write an afterburn report describing what went well, what didn’t, and ideas for improvement
Attend the Winter Retreat early in the year in order to coordinate with the rest of the MOrg leadership in planning for the rest of the year.
