Black Lives Matter

We, the leaders of Mosaic Experiment (the MOrg), made a mistake weeks ago: we did not immediately express our strong stance as an anti-racist community. We recognize that no single statement could address every aspect of how systemic racism intersects our community. We understand that poor leadership regarding race can lead to real and lasting harm. That said, our community must unlearn racism - together.

We categorically refuse to tolerate any presence of racism in any of our communities. Racism directly harms the ability of Black burners to engage in radical self-expression, participation, communal effort and immediacy. By improving the experience that Black and other burners of color have at our events, we improve the experience for all of us. Freedom to participate with immediacy increases the creative, chaotic joy of burn magic.

In order to improve things, we start with establishing the present condition. Racism exists. Historically weaponized by white people to justify owning slaves and colonizing the globe, it is still leveraged today in order to preserve power. The toxicity of racism seeps into the inner workings of all our minds, hearts and bodies. Our position and lived experience impacts how this toxicity shows in our everyday lives. If we are white, we benefit from this legacy. If we are Black, we carry the scars of lynching, segregation, discrimination, and trauma in our souls. The wounding continues to this day.

We must acknowledge that a community without racism is an alien phenomenon to those of us alive today. Currently, the members of the Mosaic community appear to be overwhelmingly white. As an all-volunteer organization, our leadership emerges from and reflects the wider community.

We also want to emphasize the impact our mostly white community can create in prioritizing growth, learning, and dialogue around racism. Since white people created and sustained this oppressive system, we must take full responsibility for dismantling it, too. This responsibility means seeking to educate ourselves, humbly acknowledging when we make mistakes, and welcoming accountability from Black burners.

Two years ago, our community declared the importance of safety at our event, and recognized the problem of sexual assault and harassment within our community. We responded by creating the Consent Team. Now, as we acknowledge the presence of racism, we must educate ourselves and hold each other accountable, just like we are doing with consent. We recognize that this will always be a work in progress, meaning continual growth and improvement over time.

We welcome increased diversity in the voices of the leadership team. However, we know the path to get there is not by singling out individual burners of color and expecting additional labor from them. There are always leadership positions available to members of our community, and we welcome any burner who desires to contribute to join us. We acknowledge that there are barriers to taking on leadership roles, and we are working to better understand and address them.

As a first step, the MOrg will update the Code of Conduct to explicitly define microaggressions as harassment. As we review our existing practices and policies, we will examine our recruitment process for the MOrg. We will look for opportunities to elevate Black burners, such as reserving a portion of art grants specifically for BIPOC artists. We commit to continually educating ourselves on racism, and will provide educational opportunities for our community through the Consent Team, both at the burn and through engagement on social media. Additionally, various members of the MOrg are involved with initiatives to address diversity within the burner community. We will continue to improve Mosaic’s operations as we uncover ways to do so.

We enthusiastically ask for your participation in this process. Please bring forward ideas, concerns, problems and solutions, either in the comments below or anonymously on the contact page. It’s your burn - how would you like it to be? How will you welcome the Black community into Mosaic Experiment?

EVENT UPDATE: Will We Burn In 2020?

We assured you we would have a decision on Mosaic Experiment 2020 in July and it is time to share that decision and answer some of your questions.

After much consideration and discussion by your departmental leads, Mosaic Experiment has been cancelled for 2020. We sincerely wanted to see you face-to-face, but this simply is not the time. Thinking through each of the options and watching as situations worsen across the country as they relate to covid-19, we cannot put our community at risk. We made our decision which was later cemented by the owner of the property who felt the risk and liability was too high to host our event at his location. We now join other events of our type looking toward 2021 with the hope that we can gather in person once again at that time.

For those of you who have purchased tickets, you have three options and you are free to do whatever works best for you. Mosaic Experiment, as an organization, has operating costs (storage rental, website & software fees, taxes) which persist through the year, burn or no burn. We've minimized those as much as possible but they are still a reality. What happens to your ticket now that the event is cancelled?

Option 1: Do nothing and your ticket will be refunded on 8/01/20.
Option 2: Donate this year's ticket money to help the organization pay for year-round operating costs.
Option 3: Rollover your ticket for next year. If you would like to donate or rollover your ticket, please email tickets@mosaicexperiment.com to communicate your decision.

If we do not hear from you, your ticket will be refunded on 8/01/20. Please know that you are ABSOLUTELY welcome to receive a ticket refund. If you choose to roll your ticket to next year or donate that ticket's value toward keeping our burn growing, we thank you. The choice is yours and we support whatever you decide.

Is this the last you will hear from us this year? Not even a little. We still have plans to take you "Through The Looking Glass" in a very different way October 1st-4th. Our upcoming organizational summer retreat and many of our plans may be virtual, but we are now working to build something special to share with you throughout our normal burn time. Details on that will be coming soon in August. Our community may be forced to evolve this year, but we will still find ways to share our creativity in the days ahead. Stay tuned!

Why should I donate my ticket money?
We have costs that need to be paid throughout the year - storage rental, website & software fees, taxes. If you would like to donate your ticket purchase send a message to tickets@mosaicexperiment.com.

Why should I rollover my ticket for next year? What if there is no event next year?
In the wise words of the Magic 8-ball - We cannot predict now.

I want to save my ticket for next year!
Send a message with the name on the ticket and email address to tickets@mosaicexperiment.com and let us know you wish to keep your ticket for 2021.

Mosaic Experiment 2020 Update

Greetings burners!

Today we’re reaching out to offer an update on the status of Mosaic Experiment 2020. With all the changes we’ve seen since the start of the year, we are desperately wanting to be together and burn with each of you. You can think of us as standing at your side, art and creativity at the ready, sharing your frustration as event after event cancels. We desperately want to gather, burn and build our intentional world between the trees of Reclaim once again this year. In a perfect world, this would be all we could ask for, but it isn’t a perfect world right now.

Will our burn happen this year? We’re weighing all the possibilities and giving things a bit more time to evolve before making our final call. With our event happening in early October, we’re a bit later than most and have some room to see what happens next. Like many burns, our first concern is to focus on the health and welfare of our attendees. It may be safety third much of the time but this is not a safety third kind of moment. Mosaic Experiment will make a final decision in July and we will share that with you at that time. In the meantime we will soon release a FAQ regarding event preparation delays (registrations, early entry, etc.) and our cancellation policy (refunds, etc) so please hold your questions until we can get that out to you. We're building it now.

When you selected “Through The Looking Glass” as your theme for this year we’re betting none of you saw how much we would all be looking for our burns through a looking glass. We haven’t given up hope yet, but we will keep you informed.

2020 Mosaic Experiment Theme Announced

We are thrilled to unveil our 2020 Mosaic Experiment theme. Join as we go "Through The Looking Glass" later this year!

Before announcing, we contacted the very creative burner called Corvus and received permission to unveil the individual who made the initial theme pitch. Corvus agreed and is already excited to share ideas for how we can play with this theme.

The original pitch: "Reflections of reality through subjective perspectives. A chance to walk in the shoes of another and collectively appreciate and understand the struggles we face together." Here is the imagery included with that initial pitch…

For those wanting the final results (based on well over 100 of you voting):

- 52.6% - Through The Looking Glass
- 25.8% - First Contact
- 21.6% - Different Kind of Human

Ladies and gentlemen... GET BUILDING!

Cast Your Vote For The 2020 Theme

After a narrowing of the field by your Mosaic leads, we have three possible themes for 2020. It is time for YOU to vote on which you would like to see made real in October!

Vote Here:

Your choices:
Pitch... Through the Looking Glass
Reflections of reality through subjective perspectives. A chance to walk in the shoes of another and collectively appreciate and understand the struggles we face together.

Pitch... First Contact
With an overarching alien theme; the idea also lends itself to first time burners, first meetings, and other firsts (wink). I envision an alien spaceship effigy with a useable meeting space for people looking for new faces.

Pitch... Different Kind of Human
The 10 Principles create a community where we all enjoy space to experiment with who we are, to express ourselves, to be included - make art out of being human. So many of us find that attending burns brings about, catalyzes, intensifies or stirs up change in our lives. In short, being a burner has made us different than we were before. This theme also links with intersectionality, embracing and learning about the unique paths all our lives have taken and experiments with setting aside all the mindless ways the wider culture is toxic. From a creative standpoint, there's a huge array of humanoid characters to choose from! Droids, fae, paradigm shifters, avengers, mythology and pop culture! So what do you want to do? How do you experiment with being human?

Voting will close on Friday, February 7th!
